It has been 230 days, more by the time you read this, that COVID-19 became a household word. The impact of the pandemic has been difficult for even the strongest but for our wounded warriors, COVID has brought challenges that few of us understand. Those challenges include job loss, childcare closures, delays in benefits and move scheduling, difficulty arranging travel for family members to assist in the recovery process all on top of recovery and rehabilitation. That is when Navy Safe Harbor Foundation (NSHF) steps in and works to lessen the burden of financial challenges to give the Sailor, the family and caregivers every opportunity at full recovery.
Since March, NSHF has filled 27 requests related to the pandemic. Your generous donations to NSHF have allowed us to assist in getting a new roof for a Sailor suffering from PTSD, rehabilitate a mobile home for a single mother of 2 special needs children so that they had a safe place to live and purchased a text-to-voice device for a recovering service member to improve his communication abilities during rehabilitation.
We want to say a heartfelt thank you to all of you who have so generously supported NSHF during this time. Without your continued support NSHF cannot meet the needs of our wounded, ill and injured Sailors.
Caregiver Coffee Break
In February, NSHF hosted the first of what was planned to be 3 Caregiver Reset programs. The aim of the program was to provide caregivers skills that would enhance their experience as caregivers, build a community of caregivers for support and friendship and to allow for some deserved rest. As with so many other things this plan was put on hold due to the pandemic. To meet this challenge, NSHF transitioned to a Virtual Caregiver Platform and we are currently hosting a 4-part Caregiver Coffee Break interactive session with 18 registered participants. The program is led by CAPT Virginia Beeson USN, (Ret) RN, MSN working on Stress Management, Resilience, Challenging Communications and Attitude & Gratitude. We look forward to this program becoming a part of our regular Caregiver program.
Wounded Warrior Games
NSHF is proud to support the Adaptive Athletes on the road to the 2021 Wounded Warrior Games. Training and trials all require a robust schedule beginning in November with virtual participation. The Army will host the games in Orlando, Florida the later part of the year. Stay tuned for more details.
